Visitors to our shores influence and shape us,
instill new ideas which partially shield us from intellect incest.
The picture on the front cover of this magazine forms
part of my collection. It is by the wonderful English artist George Large
who has lived and worked amongst us, his style is superb, brilliantly
different, harsh in its tones yet so warm to its subject matter. Titled The
Stone Masons, it was painted in 1992.
When foreigners started to buy holiday homes in
Malta in the 1960’s they turned onto Ghorfas and Remissas now better known
as Houses of Character or Farmhouses. Thus the Maltese, cross fertilized,
made this trend their very own and a fashionable industry as well as a new
way of life were born. This phenomenon preserved many of our delightful old
villages and saved them from aluminium and string developments of
Maisonettes and Garages.
